Labor secretary nominee Alexander Acosta is expected to face questions at his Senate confirmation hearing about an unusual plea deal he oversaw for a billionaire sex offender while U.S. attorney in Miami.
Acosta has won confirmation for federal posts three times previously, but he has never faced scrutiny on Capitol Hill for his time as U.S. attorney.
Critics, including attorneys for some underage victims of financier Jeffrey Epstein, say the plea agreement was a "sweetheart deal" made possible only by Epstein's wealth, connections and high-powered lawyers. Acosta has defended his decisions as the best outcome given evidence available at the time.

Israeli jets were reported to have carried out airstrikes near the Syrian capital early Wednesday, hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue hitting weapons convoys and rebuffed claims Russia had ordered the strikes halted.
Syrian opposition news outlets reported that the airstrikes took place in the Mount Qasioun region near Damascus overnight.
The Israeli raids targeted Syrian army posts in the area, the reports said, in the fourth round of airstrikes attributed to Israel in Syria in less than a week.

The decision by President Trump to install Ivanka in the West Wing while his wife lives several states away is especially odd given his history of creepy comments toward his daughter, including but not limited to: “she’s got the best body,” “I’ve said that if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her,” and “if I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father…”
“You know, this is one of those stories that goes so deep: nepotism, possible conflicts of incest, compromise of national security,” said Noah. “I mean, we should be digging into the details of a job with no title. What does that mean? But the truth is, we can’t. Because in the world we’re living in now, ain’t nobody got time for that.”
“Trump has got to get off this stuff and get off tax cuts and get back on the stuff that got him elected,” Coulter said Tuesday.

In 1804, Alexander Hamilton exposed Aaron Burr's treason plot to split New England from the Union, ruining his campaign for Governor of New York. Burr plotted to kill Hamilton, as attorney Martin Van Buren prepared the legal bail of William Van Ness, Burr's associate and intermediary in the duel with Hamilton, anticipating his arrest for the murder. Van Buren was incorporated into the Burr political machine, and regularly visited Burr, his political boss and mentor, at his home. When the New York coroner's jury ruled homicide in the killing of Hamilton, Burr and his aides, John Swartwout and William Van Ness, fled New York to avoid prosecution.
In his endeavors, both before and after the Hamilton murder, Burr was connected with the highest level of British army and espionage leaders, including British intelligence officer Charles Williamson to whom Burr communicated an offer of his services, passed on to British Ambassador Anthony Merry, who wrote to the Foreign Office:
I have just received an offer from Mr. Burr, the actual Vice-President of the United States ... to lend his assistance to his Majesty's government in any manner in which they may think fit to employ him, particularly in endeavoring to effect a separation of the western part of the United States from that which lies between the Atlantic and the mountains, in its whole extent. His proposition on this and other subjects will be fully detailed to your Lordship by Colonel Williamson.... If ... his Majesty's minister should think proper to listen to his offer ... his present situation in this country, where he is now cast off as much by the democratic as by the Federal party, and where he still preserves connections with some people of influence, added to his great ambition and spirit of revenge against the present Administration, may possibly induce him to exert the talents and activity which he possesses with fidelity to his employers (emphasis added).
Another of Burr's aides was Edward Livingston, a former New York mayor, with whom he planned to seize Louisiana, and, with the British, to conquer Mexico.
In 1805 and 1806, Burr spent many weeks at Jackson's home in Nashville, Tenn., and began recruiting mercenaries. Jackson personally arranged 40 boats for the endeavor and recruited 75 men. The plan was exposed, and Burr was arrested in 1807, and put on trial for treason against the United States. Jackson himself was subpoenaed as a material witness and as an unindicted co-conspirator.
Congressman John Randolph of Roanoke, Va., was an ally of Burr and Jackson, and served as chairman of the grand jury shaping the charge against Burr. After the trial, Burr went into exile in England with his aide Samuel Swartwout, where he lived with British secret intelligence strategist Jeremy Bentham, the two becoming best friends. Burr also strategized with the head of Britain's spy rings in America, Lord Castlereagh.

Saudi Brig. Gen. Ahmed al-Asiri today told a group of US reporters that the Trump Administration has made promises to “significantly” increase US intelligence and military support for the kingdom against Iran, with a particular eye of fighting against the “Iran-backed” Shi’ites in Yemen.
...Trump is definitely on board with hostility against Iran, and Saudi officials say that Trump has invited Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to help him “make the plan for the Middle East.” Whatever other aspects this plan ends up having, Saudi input ensures it will mean US hostility toward Iran.

Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. What I can't fathom right now is why anyone would want, with the situation the way it is right now in this country, another enemy. You know that old conservation of enemies theory: You don't want any more than you can handle at any given time. Look at who we're lining up, Paul. We're lining up China. We're lining up Iran and all that goes along with Iran, including Hezbollah in Lebanon. We are lining up with North Korea. We are lining up with Russia. This is absurd. John McCain and Lindsay Graham can pontificate all day long, but I'm going to tell you that they're idiots. We do not need an enemy list that is beyond what we could even in the most wild moment contemplate handling. We don't have the military forces to handle all these enemies, and, yet, we're bearding them, as it were.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Tuesday slammed President Trump for long claiming that he can't release his tax returns due to an audit after the White House made some tax info public to undercut an MSNBC report.
“The White House’s willingness to release some tax information when it suits them proves Donald Trump’s audit excuse is a sham,” DNC senior adviser Zac Petkanas said in a statement.
"If they can release some of his information, they can release all of the information. The only reason not to release his returns is to hide what’s in them such as financial connections with Russian oligarchs and the Kremlin.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) and ranking member Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) have asked the White House to offer by Monday any evidence showing Trump Tower was wiretapped.
A congressional aide confirmed to The Hill that Schiff and Nunes made the request in a letter to the White House. The letter was first reported by The Associated Press.
In his January inauguration speech, US President Donald Trump made a seemingly straightforward pledge: “We will follow two simple rules: buy American and hire American.”
His daughter is the exception: even as he spoke, at least eight shipments of Ivanka Trump-branded shoes, bags and clothes — more than 53.5 tons — were steaming towards American ports from China, according to US Customs bills of lading examined by AFP.
...More than two tons of ladies’ polyester woven blouses, 1,600 cowhide leather wallets and 23 tons of made-in-China footwear were among at least 82 such shipments that passed US Customs — almost one per business day — from Trump’s November 8 election win through February 26, records showed.
The goods were made in China by three US companies holding licenses to manufacture products for Ivanka Trump’s fashion line: garment maker G-III, Mondani Handbags and Marc Fisher Footwear.

Former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell believes the leak of CIA documents published this week by WikiLeaks "has to be an inside job."

He argued that the data is on CIA's "secret network" that is not connected to other networks.
...When not bringing in foreign workers, Trump shipped the manufacturing of his Trump-branded products overseas. And when not doing that, Trump built his buildings with Chinese — rather than American — steel.
...The quintessential example of Trump taking undeserved credit for a job announcement is with respect to the Carrier Corporation. In late November, Trump suggested he personally stopped Carrier’s offshoring of 1,400 jobs. The reality was more complicated: Trump had nothing to do with the deal, other than enlisting Mike Pence to help gift Carrier $7 million in tax cuts. Meanwhile, at least 600 of the 1,400 workers were still laid off. And Carrier has subsequently announced that some of the 800 “saved” will be replaced with automation.
All Trump did was broker a $7 million taxpayer-shouldered payout to a company with a history of taking taxpayer dollars then outsourcing jobs — a company that then continued to lay off workers and ship jobs overseas. If Trump thinks he got a bargain, it’s no wonder he went bankrupt six times.
...Donald Trump inherited a strong economy — far from the “mess” he claims — and it’s time to see what he can do other than stiff small business owners, outsource, bust unions, scam “novice investors," and set up Wall Street banks to prey on America's working families.
For starters, Trump needs to take responsibility for the over 34,137 jobs, according to our count, gone since he took the oath of office. And then he needs to come up with a real economic agenda that isn't rooted in empty rhetoric and enriches the wealthy at the expense of Americans working hard to get ahead.
Undeterred by the disastrous commando raid on Yemen in the first days of his Administration, where plenty of civilians were killed but the target got away, President Donald Trump has escalated US military involvement in the tragic Yemen conflict to an unprecedented level. In fact as Foreign Policy reports, the US President has bombed Yemen more in the past week than President Obama (no peacenik) has bombed in a year.
Any foreign forces, including those from the US, that enter Syria without invitation are invaders, Syrian President Bashar Assad told Chinese media in an interview, noting that no one had given the US troops currently in Manbij permission to be there.
“Any foreign troops coming to Syria without our invitation or consultation or permission, they are invaders, whether they are American, Turkish, or any other one,” Assad told Chinese PHOENIX TV, as cited by the Syrian state-run SANA news agency.
When a journalist asked the Syrian president if Damascus had “opened doors” for American troops in Aleppo province’s city of Manbij, Assad said “No, we didn’t.”
“What are they [foreign troops] going to do? To fight ISIS [Islamic State, formerly ISIL]? The Americans lost nearly every war. They lost in Iraq, they had to withdraw at the end. Even in Somalia, let alone Vietnam in the past and Afghanistan.”
According to Assad, the US “didn’t succeed anywhere they sent troops, they only create a mess; they are very good in creating problems and destroying, but they are very bad in finding solutions.”

The White House move quickly Friday to take credit for a positive jobs report, saying the growth was fueled by President Trump's ambitious economic agenda.
The U.S. economy added a robust 235,000 jobs in February, while the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent, continuing a streak of 77 straight months of jobs growth in the country.
...While Cohn acknowledged that much of the February number was due to a warm winter, he gave the White House’s early pledges credit for better-than-expected labor market growth.
...Since the jobs recovery kicked into full gear in 2010, February has typically been a strong month for job creation.
There were 238,000 jobs created that month in 2015 and 237,000 a year ago.
Although the Syrian army, with its ally Russia, has made significant gains against ISIS over the past week or so, the Washington Post is reporting tonight that President Trump has for the first time sent regular US military personnel into that country in combat positions. This is an unprecedented escalation of US involvement in the Syrian war and it comes without Congressional authorization, without UN authorization, and without the authorization of the government of Syria. In short it is three ways illegal.
